Procedure for Assisting Students with Temporary Conditions

If a student in your class has a limitation due to an injury or illness and it is expected to be short-term (less than 6 months), please make every effort to provide the appropriate modifications within the classroom.

Using the example of a dominant hand injury, appropriate modifications might include:

  • A temporary notetaker
  • Taping lectures
  • Use of a laptop for testing
  • Extended time on tests
  • Copies of overheads or notes from instructor

If the current classroom is inaccessible due to mobility issues or health conditions that make climbing stairs difficult or impossible, please request a classroom change.

If you are not sure about what types of modifications are appropriate, you can contact the Disability Resource Center and speak with a coordinator.

If the duration of a student’s condition is severe, or is expected to have long-term or permanent functional limitations, please have the student contact the Disability Resource Center.
