Realtime Captioning
Realtime captioning services are provided to students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing and do not know sign language. Realtime captioning, or RTC, provides a verbatim account of spoken words in the classroom that is simultaneously created and transmitted by a highly skilled court reporter. Realtime captioners utilize stenography equipment and specialized software to produce a visible transcript of the class lecture. This literal translation is displayed on a laptop computer monitor for the student to read during class. Afterwards, the captioner edits the transcript and provides a copy on disk to the student.
