Campus Transit Buses

Although many Campus Transit buses are equipped with a life, the regularly scheduled buses do not normally provide bus service to persons with mobility impairments due to the heavy passenger loads and short time intervals between buses. The lifts are available only for special field trip charter services and require bus driver operation at the rear door.

Priority seating is available for persons not requiring the use of the lift at the front of each bus. Ask your driver for assistance when boarding if seating is not available.

Van Service

Accessible van service is provided by the Campus Transit System and is available to eligible persons with mobility, visual and other health-related impairments.

Eligibility For Service

Eligibility for use of the van service on a regular basis must establish through the Disability Resource Center, Clark-Howell Hall (542-8719). Students, staff and faculty with temporary disabilities who require service may contact Campus Transit directly, 2505 Riverbend Road.

Van Operators, passengers with disabilities and their personal care attendants (if required) are authorized to use the van.

Van Service Limits

Service is available to all on-campus locations on either side of the streets served by Campus Transit bus routes. Van service to off-campus areas along bus routes which are designated as "Park & Ride" routes which have the sole purpose of facilitating off-campus parking will limited to the parking areas served by those routes and on-campus destinations.

Through a contractual agreement with the Athens-Clarke Count government, student with disabilities may use Athens Transit System’s service, The Lift, with no charge for off-campus travel. Athens Transit System requires prior certification for users and 24-hour notice on most trips. If you may have a need to use public transportation outside our service area, be sure to call Athens Transit at 613-3430 to find out their policies regarding ridership.

Van operators, because of schedule requirements, can only assist with loading and unloading passengers. Passengers requiring assistance beyond this should obtain the services of a personal care attendant.

Scheduling Van Service

Two types of service are available. Regularly scheduled service allows you to schedule trips, which occur, on a repeating basis over an extended period of time. On-call service allows you to schedule trips, which occur on a irregular basis or which occur several times over a short period of time.

Regularly Scheduled Service

Students requesting van service should provide a copy of their class schedule to Campus Transit to aid in the establishment of the required van service. Changes in the regular daily schedules can be made by calling Campus Transit.

At the beginning of each quarter and at other times as the need arises, a transportation schedule will be devised to accommodate passengers using the van service on a regular basis. In order to arrive at your destination on time, riders should allow at least 30 minutes prior to each appointment. Students requiring regular use of the van service are advised to schedule at least an hour between classes for which they require transportation.

On-Call Service

Call Campus Transit weekdays from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. to schedule irregular trips. The van will be radio-dispatched to pick you up as the schedule allows. After these hours you may telephone the van directly at 540-0758. Some delay may be expected if the request conflicts with a previously scheduled (regular or irregular) trip. The rider will be informed of the approximate pick-up time.

Service Delays and Problems

The vans are very busy at peak hours of the day. To avoid delaying other patrons, be ready to board when the van arrives. Call Campus Transit if your van does not arrive within five minutes of the scheduled time. After hours, if a scheduled van does not arrive promptly, call the van directly on the mobile phone. Call the University Police as a last resort, only if you experience a problem reaching the van on the mobile telephone.

Suspension or Termination of Service

Van service will end upon termination of eligibility due to a change in student or employment status, or upon resumption of normal life activities as determined by medical personnel. In order to meet the needs of all patrons of this service, an individual’s service may be suspended or terminated as a result of excessive no-shows or late pick-ups for scheduled van services. Any patron who misses three (3) trips in an academic semester may be suspended from this service for the remainder of the semester.
