RE: Computer Access at UGA
In 2000, the UGA Disability Resource Center Advisory Committee chaired by Dr. Karen Kalivoda, the Director of that Center, recommended enhancements of access to UGA computers for the Disability Resource Center.
The Disability Resource Center (DRC) operates an Assistive Technology Lab (ATL) featuring current adaptive and assistive technology as well as technical consultation beyond minimum standards. The DRC, however, is not intended as the sole support base for over 1,200 students with disabilities. Consequently, it remains important that work continue on addressing the accommodation needs of students at computer sites throughout the campus. Employing units and units responsible for delivery of programs and services, likewise, need to maintain a level of readiness to accommodate the computer access needs of persons with disabilities consistent with unit mission.
The enclosed list contains updated suggested minimum requirements for software, along with a list of adaptive software, hardware, and peripherals, plus web page accessibility resources. Questions regarding these suggestions, vendor options, or related costs may be directed to Ian Simmons, Information Technology Specialist, in the Disability Resource Center (isimmons@uga.edu).
It is requested that addressees assure that this information is brought to the attention of departmental or work unit computer support personnel, site coordinators, and personnel responsible for web page design with a view toward routine EDP replacement and upgrade acquisitions which lend themselves to adaptive technology.
