Disability-Related Absences

Instructor Information:
  1. Students eligible to receive disability-related absences are responsible for meeting with each instructor to discuss their accommodation.
  2. Disability-related absences are recommended for students with chronic disabilities.
  3. Instructors are asked to consider flexibility in standard attendance requirements, not to lower academic standards or provide adjustments that are excessive or contradictory to stated course objectives. The DRC requests that instructors consider the impact a student's disability may have on class attendance. It is up to each instructor to decide how many absences are permitted.
  4. Students are responsible for keeping their instructors, health practitioners, and disability specialist informed of their current health status. It is recommended that instructors request verification after each absence.
Student Responsibilities:
  1. Meet with instructors to discuss your specific disability-related needs for the class. While the DRC may recommend that instructors consider flexibility in attendance requirements, instructors are not expected to compromise the essential course requirements or fundamentally alter the course.
  2. Keep instructors, health practitioners, and your disability specialist informed as to your current health status. It is recommended that you send an email confirmation to your instructor and disability specialist regarding arrangements for these accommodations.
  3. Provide verification of absences from health practitioners for instructors when requested.
