University of Georgia Policy on Course Substitution and Course Modification for Students with Disabilities

The University of Georgia seeks to provide students who have disabilities the opportunity to participate fully in its educational programs and services. In keeping with this philosophy, it is University policy that students with documented disabilities receive reasonable accommodations by way of access to classroom information and course substitution.

The University of Georgia's Disability Resource Center (DRC) provides services to students with disabilities that are covered in the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Students seeking accommodations must provide documentation which meets the approved criteria established by the DRC. The staff of the DRC will determine whether or not course substitutions and course modifications are required by the ADA.

  1. Course Modification
    • Should the DRC determine that course modifications are appropriate based on documentation provided, students will be provided a list of individualized modifications according to the course requirements and the student's disability. The modifications may require changes in the distribution and presentation of course material and in the evaluation of academic performance. It is the student's responsibility to meet with the instructor to discuss implementation of the modifications. The DRC staff is available to consult with instructors as needed.
  2. Course Substitution
    • Students need to provide documentation that shows evidence that their disability interferes with their ability to learn a specific subject. Should the DRC determine that course substitutions are appropriate based on the documentation provided, the DRC will provide a letter of support to the appropriate Dean. The student, in consultation with their academic advisor, will select substitute courses from the approved list of courses. If the student is interested in alternative substitutes they can petition the dean for approval. In the absence of an approved list, the degree granting unit will provide a list of acceptable substitutions.
    • The DRC may recommend a course substitution if the instructor and student determine modifications do not adequately accommodate the student's disability.

Appeals of decisions should be directed to the Educational Affairs Committee, Office of the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, Administration Building, University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia 30602-1651.
