General Tips for Working with a Sign Language Interpreter

  1. Interpreters for all academic courses are scheduled through the Disability Resource Center. All other requests for interpreters (meetings with professors, labs, other academically related events) may be made by either the Deaf or hearing person involved by contacting the Disability Resource Center at (706) 542-8719. For questions about scheduling interpreters, please see our policy online or write Kevin Karneboge, Interpreter Coordinator.
  2. The interpreter(s) assigned to your class will contact you to discuss the role of the interpreter and the interpreting process before the quarter begins. After the quarter has begun, you may wish to address additional concerns and questions to the Deaf student by utilizing the services of an interpreter.
  3. The interpreter(s) assigned will require an overview of what will be transpiring during the class or meeting with a student before the assignment begins, as well as providing copies of the course syllabus, handouts, etc. to the interpreter as you distribute them.
  4. The interpreter(s) assigned to your class will interpret all information that is transmitted, whether spoken or signed. For questions about this, please see the RID Code of Ethics, which UGA interpreters are required to follow.
  5. Questions and comments should be directed to the Deaf person and not the interpreter (ex. "Tell him," "Ask her.")
  6. Lighting in the room and other logistical aspects should be considered when an interpreter is working in your classroom.
  7. When using visual aids or demonstrations, allow time for a shift from the interpreter to the visual aid.
