Interpreter Orientations for Instructors
- Philosophy:
-
We believe that it is important for the instructors to not only receive information early about having an interpreter working with him or her in the classroom, but also that it is important for the instructor, whenever possible, to meet the interpreters he or she will be working with before the semester starts. Interpreters employed by the University of Georgia adhere strictly to the RID, Inc. Code of Ethics as it applies to educational interpreting settings.
- Procedure
-
- Once the schedules have been received from the deaf students that require interpreters in the classroom, the interpreter coordinator schedules either an interpreter or team of interpreters that will be working in that class.
- The interpreter or team is responsible for contacting the professor/instructor (and, if necessary, graduate assistant) that will be teaching the class he or she will be interpreting.
- A meeting is set up for the interpreter/s and the instructor and any other relevant parties from the department. During the meeting, procedures for working with interpreters and situations that may occur in the classroom are discussed.
- The instructor is given a list of guidelines for reference and, if possible, a second meeting is set up to discuss problems, questions, etc. that may arise from both parties after the semester has started.
- Additional follow-up meetings may be conducted at the request of the professor/instructor and/or the interpreter(s).
