Eligibility for Students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing

  1. Diagnosis

Students who are deaf and hard of hearing are encouraged to register with the DRC to explore the benefits of appropriate accommodations. Even a mild hearing impairment can present difficulty in situations with extraneous or competing sounds in the environment. Accommodations are determined on an individual basis depending on documentation supplied by the student. Students will meet with a disability specialist to determine what accommodations may be helpful and appropriate.

At a minimum, an audiogram should be presented to document the degree of hearing impairment. Supporting documentation may include:

    • audiometric assessment
    • otolaryngology evaluation
    • speech & language evaluation report
    • hearing aid evaluation

Elements of a diagnostic report helpful in assessing appropriate accommodations include:

    • description of use of amplification
    • speech reception and speech discrimination
    • recommendations for classroom and testing accommodations

  2. Diagnosed Condition Satisfies Definition of a Disability
  3. Behavior must be consistent with the University of Georgia Conduct Code
